Sample Knitwear Exports (an invented company)
An exporter of knitted garments that keeps stock in Tally and counts production on an Excel sheet.
1. What we looked at
Two Excel files, one Tally stock export, the production sheet, and a 45-minute screen-share with the owner.
2. What we found: Tally stock against the production sheet
| Item | In Tally | On the sheet | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton tee, white, M | 1,240 | 1,180 | 60 more in Tally |
| Cotton tee, navy, L | 860 | 860 | None |
| Hoodie, grey, XL | 310 | 355 | 45 fewer in Tally |
| Polo, black, S | 505 | 505 | None |
In this example the two differences come from returns and rework entered on only one side. Two of the four items matched.
3. The manual jobs that cost the most time
- Typing the production sheet into Tally by hand each evening.
- Chasing returns that were counted on one side and not the other.
- Building the monthly stock summary for the buyer from three files.
4. What to fix first, with a fixed quote
One daily check that lines up Tally stock with the production sheet and lists every difference for a person to approve. The real report ends with the scope, the price and the date, fixed before any work starts.
