Questions

What is a hash for?

It is a short fingerprint of a file. If even one byte differs, the fingerprint is completely different, so you can tell whether a download arrived whole and unchanged.

Can it hash a very big file?

Yes. Files over 256 MB are read in small pieces so the page does not run out of memory. For those, only SHA-256 is worked out.

Where is MD5?

Left out on purpose. MD5 is broken for security checks, and SHA-256 is what download pages publish now.
