Questions
How does it make the file smaller?
In picture mode each page is drawn at a lower resolution and saved as a JPEG, then rebuilt into a PDF. That works very well for scans. In tidy mode the file is written again in a tighter form, which helps a little.
Why can I not select the text afterwards?
Because the pages became pictures. If you need the text, use tidy mode, or keep your original next to the small copy.
It got bigger. Why?
A PDF made from a document is mostly text, which is already small, and pictures of text can be larger. The tool tells you when this happens. Keep your original.
